VINYLSORB®

Coconut-shell carbon adsorption system for vinyl chloride removal from water

Targeted VOC Adsorption

Capture vinyl chloride before it reaches the tap

VINYLSORB® is a targeted adsorption system using OrganoSorb® coconut-shell activated carbon for reducing vinyl chloride and selected volatile organic compounds in drinking water and process-water streams.

Vinyl chloride, also known as vinyl chloride monomer or chloroethene, is a volatile chlorinated organic compound primarily used to manufacture polyvinyl chloride. VINYLSORB® passes contaminated water through a high-surface-area bed of OrganoSorb® media, where vinyl chloride molecules are transferred from the water and retained within the carbon’s porous structure. The system can operate in upflow or downflow configurations and may be applied as a dedicated treatment stage or final polishing barrier.

VOC-Contaminated Water

Flexible adsorption configurations for complex volatile organic contaminant streams.

Four adsorption functions engineered into one system

VC

Targeted vinyl chloride adsorption (VINYL-CAPTURE™)

OrganoSorb® provides an extensive porous carbon surface for transferring dissolved vinyl chloride from water into the adsorption media.

MP

High internal adsorption area (MICROPORE-SORB™)

The coconut-shell carbon media provides a published total surface area of approximately 1,500–1,600 m²/g, creating abundant internal sites for adsorbable organic molecules.

DF

Flexible hydraulic configuration (DUAL-FLOW™)

VINYLSORB® systems can be configured for either upflow or downflow operation, subject to correct vessel design, bed retention, backwashing and hydraulic distribution.

VOC

Final organic-contaminant polishing (VOC-POLISH™)

In addition to vinyl chloride, the carbon base may adsorb other volatile organic compounds. Each additional VOC requires compound-specific capacity and breakthrough validation.

Porous carbon engineered for vinyl chloride capture

VINYLSORB® uses the internal pore structure of coconut-shell activated carbon to remove dissolved vinyl chloride through physical adsorption.

  • Liquid-to-Solid Mass Transfer – Vinyl chloride molecules move from the bulk water to the external surface of the OrganoSorb® granules.
  • Internal Pore Diffusion – The molecules diffuse into the carbon’s internal pore structure, where most of the available adsorption area is located.
  • Surface Retention – Weak intermolecular forces retain adsorbable organic molecules on the internal carbon surface.
  • Breakthrough-Controlled Operation – As adsorption sites become occupied, the outlet concentration gradually increases. Regular analytical monitoring identifies when the media requires replacement or validated regeneration.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Essential information about vinyl chloride, OrganoSorb® and VINYLSORB® system operation.

Contact Support
What is VINYLSORB®?
VINYLSORB® is the application name for an OrganoSorb® coconut-shell activated-carbon system specifically configured to remove vinyl chloride from water.
What is vinyl chloride?
Vinyl chloride is a volatile chlorinated organic compound with the molecular formula C₂H₃Cl. It is primarily used to manufacture PVC.
Why is vinyl chloride in drinking water a concern?
Vinyl chloride is a recognized human carcinogen. Long-term exposure above applicable drinking-water limits can increase health risks.
What is the U.S. EPA limit for vinyl chloride?
The U.S. EPA Maximum Contaminant Level is 0.002 mg/L, equivalent to 2 µg/L or 2 ppb. Other countries may apply different requirements.
How does VINYLSORB® remove vinyl chloride?
Water passes through a porous carbon bed. Vinyl chloride molecules diffuse into the internal pore structure and are retained by adsorption.
Can VINYLSORB® guarantee zero vinyl chloride?
No universal zero-concentration guarantee should be made. Performance depends on inlet concentration, competing organics, flow, contact time, temperature, media condition and analytical detection limits.
Can the system remove other VOCs?
Coconut-shell activated carbon can adsorb various organic contaminants, but capacity and affinity differ considerably. Each VOC requires individual testing.
Can VINYLSORB® operate in upflow and downflow modes?
Yes. The brochure lists both configurations. The correct arrangement depends on vessel design, hydraulic loading, bed retention and backwash requirements.
How long does the media last?
The brochure mentions an expected service life of up to five years. Actual life depends on contaminant loading, competing substances, flow rate, breakthrough limit and regeneration frequency.
How is vinyl chloride breakthrough detected?
It must be determined through representative inlet and outlet sampling using an approved VOC analytical method. Taste and odor are not reliable indicators.
Can OrganoSorb® be regenerated?
The brochure describes OXYDES-P-assisted regeneration, but capacity recovery, emissions and cycle life require application-specific validation.
How should exhausted media be handled?
Spent carbon may contain vinyl chloride and other hazardous VOCs. It must be contained, characterized, transported, regenerated or disposed of according to the SDS and applicable environmental regulations.
