CorrTrapp®

Phosphate-free magnesium mineral media for pH stabilisation and corrosion-risk reduction

Corrosion Control

Stabilise water chemistry. Help protect valuable infrastructure.

CorrTrapp® is a dissolving, magnesium-based treatment media developed to neutralise acidic water, increase alkalinity and help reduce corrosion risks in drinking-water and industrial water systems.

Acidic, weakly buffered water can attack metallic pipes, fittings, tanks and process equipment. CorrTrapp® gradually reacts with the water to neutralise acidity and release magnesium alkalinity. Under suitable water-chemistry conditions, the resulting pH adjustment and mineral balance can support the development of protective surface films on iron, copper, zinc, nickel and other compatible metallic surfaces. The media provides a phosphate-free alternative for applications where mineral-based pH correction is preferred. Final performance depends on the complete water chemistry, pipe material, temperature, hydraulic conditions and contact time, so each installation should be validated through water analysis and corrosion monitoring.

Phosphate-free treatment / Controlled mineral conditioning

CorrTrapp Introduction

One mineral media.
Multiple corrosion-control applications.

CorrTrapp® can be integrated into properly designed upflow contact vessels for municipal, commercial and industrial water systems requiring acidity neutralisation, alkalinity adjustment or corrosion-risk management.

Municipal Water Distribution

Centralised neutralisation and alkalinity control for city water networks and distribution mains.

Point-of-Entry and Well Water

Conditioning acidic well supplies to protect residential and commercial plumbing from aggressive water.

Boilers and Hot-Water Systems

Preventing acidic corrosion in feed water and heating loops under validated operating guidelines.

Cooling-Water Systems

Maintaining stable pH and alkalinity to safeguard heat exchangers and recirculating loops.

Industrial Process Water

Tailored mineral conditioning for food/beverage, refinery, paint, pigment, and oil/gas water applications.

Acidic Mine and Groundwater

Buffering highly aggressive, low-pH mine drainage and acidified water sources following chemical compatibility checks.

Four treatment functions / Engineered into one mineral media

Gradual Acidity Neutralisation (pH-CONTROL)

The magnesium-based media reacts with acidic water and dissolved carbonic acidity, helping increase pH without continuous liquid-caustic dosing.

Improved Buffering Capacity (ALKALINITY)

CorrTrapp® contributes magnesium alkalinity, helping the treated water resist rapid pH fluctuations and maintain more stable operating conditions.

Support for Protective Surface Films (PASSIVATION)

Under suitable saturation and hydraulic conditions, magnesium-containing mineral films may develop on compatible metallic surfaces and help lower corrosion rates.

Phosphate-Free Water Conditioning (MINERAL-CONDITIONING)

The dissolving mineral media adds magnesium while avoiding conventional phosphate-based chemical dosing. Performance and mineral release should be verified through treated-water testing.

The chemistry behind CorrTrapp®

CorrTrapp® combines acid neutralisation, alkalinity generation and mineral-surface conditioning. Its effectiveness depends on achieving the correct contact time and maintaining appropriate treated-water chemistry.

  • Electrochemical Corrosion – Metal corrosion involves anodic metal dissolution ($Fe \rightarrow Fe^{2+} + 2e^-$) and cathodic reduction ($O_2 + 2H_2O + 4e^- \rightarrow 4OH^-$ in aerated near-neutral water).
  • Magnesium Oxide Hydration – The magnesium-based media reacts with water to form magnesium hydroxide ($MgO + H_2O \rightarrow Mg(OH)_2$).
  • Acid Neutralisation – Magnesium hydroxide consumes acidity and releases magnesium ions ($Mg(OH)_2 + 2H^+ \rightarrow Mg^{2+} + 2H_2O$), increasing pH and improving alkalinity.
  • Surface-Film Development – Under appropriate pH, alkalinity and saturation conditions, protective mineral films may form on pipe surfaces to reduce corrosion rates.

Asked Questions

Essential information about CorrTrapp® selection, operation, monitoring and maintenance.

Contact Support
What is CorrTrapp®?
CorrTrapp® is a dissolving magnesium-based mineral media designed to neutralise acidic water, increase alkalinity and support corrosion-risk reduction.
How does CorrTrapp® work?
The media reacts gradually with water, forming magnesium hydroxide that consumes acidity and releases magnesium. This can increase pH, improve buffering and support protective mineral-film development.
Is CorrTrapp® phosphate-free?
Yes. Its treatment mechanism is based on magnesium mineral chemistry rather than phosphate dosing.
Does CorrTrapp® completely stop corrosion?
No treatment media can guarantee the elimination of every corrosion mechanism. CorrTrapp® can help reduce corrosion risk when correctly selected and operated, but results depend on the water chemistry and system materials.
Can it protect lead and copper plumbing?
Correct pH and alkalinity management can help control metal release, but performance must be demonstrated through lead and copper sampling. Treatment is not a substitute for replacing lead service lines or unsafe plumbing materials.
What pH will CorrTrapp® produce?
The final pH depends on influent acidity, alkalinity, carbon dioxide, flow rate, contact time, temperature and media condition. It should be established through testing rather than presented as a universal fixed value.
Will CorrTrapp® cause scale?
Increasing pH can change calcium carbonate and magnesium-mineral saturation. Scaling risk should be assessed using the complete water analysis and confirmed during operation.
Does the media add magnesium to the water?
Yes. Magnesium is released as the media neutralises acidity. The treated-water magnesium concentration should be monitored where drinking-water or process limits apply.
Does a CorrTrapp® system require backwashing?
Requirements depend on vessel design, suspended solids and operating conditions. Although the dissolving media may require less routine backwashing than some filter beds, flushing or backwashing may be necessary after stagnation or when pressure loss increases.
How often must the media be replaced?
CorrTrapp® is consumed during treatment. Refill frequency depends on water acidity, throughput, vessel size and operating conditions. Bed depth and treated-water pH should be monitored.
Can CorrTrapp® be used for drinking water?
Only when the supplied product and complete treatment system meet the applicable local drinking-water approvals, purity standards and maximum-use requirements. Certification documentation should be obtained before installation.
What parameters should be monitored?
Monitor influent and treated-water pH, alkalinity, magnesium, calcium, hardness, conductivity, carbon dioxide, chloride, sulfate, dissolved oxygen and relevant metals. Corrosion coupons or probes and consumer-tap sampling may also be required.
