NITROSOFT®

Two-in-one nitrate removal and water softening

Two-in-One Treatment

Remove nitrate / Soften hard water in one system

NITROSOFT® combines selective nitrate treatment and hardness removal in one compact point-of-entry system for residential drinking-water supplies.

Each NITROSOFT® system contains Watch Water® NITROTRAPP® and HARDNESSTRAPP® media in a single fiberglass-composite pressure vessel. The published media ratio is 50:50. NITROTRAPP® targets nitrate ions, while HARDNESSTRAPP® removes calcium and magnesium hardness. An integrated regeneration system restores media capacity, while the adjustable blending valve allows treated and untreated water to be mixed to achieve the commissioned finished-water nitrate and hardness setpoints. Regular laboratory testing and appropriate safeguards are essential because nitrate is an acute drinking-water contaminant.

Two contaminants / One compact treatment system

NITROSOFT Introduction

One system.
Complete household-water conditioning.

Developed for point-of-entry treatment where nitrate and water hardness occur together and both must be controlled before household distribution.

Private Well Water

Treatment of tested groundwater affected by nitrate and hardness.

Single-Family Homes

Whole-house treatment for households of approximately two to six people (NITROSOFT® One).

Multi-Family Properties

Models for two- and three-family residential properties (NITROSOFT® Two & Three).

Agricultural Regions

Treatment of groundwater influenced by fertilizer use and agricultural runoff.

Hard Water with Nitrate

Simultaneous control of nitrate and calcium-magnesium hardness in a single vessel.

Point-of-Entry Drinking Water

Central treatment before water is distributed to household fixtures and appliances.

Four treatment functions / Integrated into one cabinet

NO₃

Selective Nitrate Removal (NITRATE-CAPTURE)

NITROTRAPP® media captures nitrate ions from the incoming water. Finished-water nitrate concentration must be verified using an appropriate analytical method.

Ca/Mg

Calcium and Magnesium Removal (HARDNESS-CAPTURE)

HARDNESSTRAPP® media reduces hardness by capturing calcium and magnesium ions, providing conventionally softened water.

PB

Adjustable Finished-Water Blending (PRECISION-BLEND)

A mixing valve blends treated and untreated water to establish the commissioned nitrate and residual-hardness setpoints. Nitrate safety must never depend on an unmonitored manual setting.

RC

Automatic Media Regeneration (REGEN-CONTROL)

The system includes a brine well, brine valve and electrically controlled regeneration process to restore nitrate- and hardness-treatment capacity.

How simultaneous nitrate and hardness removal works

NITROSOFT® combines anion treatment for negatively charged nitrate with cation treatment for positively charged hardness minerals.

  • Nitrate-Ion Capture – Nitrate ($NO_3^-$) is a negatively charged ion. NITROTRAPP® contains functional sites designed to capture nitrate while water passes through the media bed.
  • Hardness-Ion Capture – Calcium and magnesium are positively charged hardness ions. HARDNESSTRAPP® captures these ions to reduce measured water hardness.
  • Layered or Mixed Dual-Media Treatment – NITROTRAPP® and HARDNESSTRAPP® are installed in a 50:50 ratio in one pressure vessel. Final bed arrangement and hydraulic behavior are documented in the installation manual.
  • Regeneration and Rinsing – During regeneration, captured nitrate and hardness ions are displaced from the media and transferred into a concentrated waste stream. Correct brine composition, dosage, contact time and rinsing are essential.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Important information about nitrate removal, water softening, regeneration, blending and finished-water monitoring.

Contact Support
What is NITROSOFT®?
It is a whole-house point-of-entry system combining nitrate removal and hardness softening in a single cabinet-mounted unit.
Which treatment media are used?
The system uses Watch Water® NITROTRAPP® for nitrate and HARDNESSTRAPP® for calcium and magnesium hardness.
What is the published media ratio?
The existing webpage states that the two media are installed in a 50:50 ratio.
Does NITROSOFT® require regeneration?
Yes. It is a regenerable treatment system equipped with a brine well and brine valve.
Does the system remove nitrite?
The product page specifically describes nitrate removal. Nitrite performance should not be claimed unless separately tested and documented.
Why is nitrate monitoring important?
Nitrate is an acute drinking-water contaminant. EPA’s limit is 10 mg/L when reported as nitrate-nitrogen, equivalent to approximately 44.3 mg/L as nitrate. Units must always be stated clearly. (US EPA nitrate information)
What does the mixing valve do?
It blends treated and untreated water to achieve commissioned nitrate and hardness setpoints. Finished-water nitrate must be verified after adjustment.
Can the mixing valve be set once and forgotten?
No. Inlet nitrate, media exhaustion and water demand can change. Regular testing and a suitable monitoring or fail-safe strategy are necessary.
Which NITROSOFT® model do I need?
Selection depends on nitrate loading, hardness, daily consumption, peak flow, competing ions and required regeneration frequency—not household size alone.
Can ordinary water softening remove nitrate?
Standard cation-exchange softening removes positively charged calcium and magnesium ions. It does not remove negatively charged nitrate ions.
Is softened water more toxic when nitrate is present?
Conventional softening does not create additional nitrate. The nitrate remains in the water unless a nitrate-specific treatment process removes it.
How should system performance be verified?
Test the treated and blended water using an accredited laboratory during commissioning and at intervals determined by local regulations, inlet variability and system capacity.
