SMART PO₂®

Powerful double oxidation for complex industrial wastewater

Double Oxidation

Two radical pathways / One advanced oxidation process

SMART PO₂® is a solid wastewater-treatment formulation designed to generate sulfate and hydroxyl radical pathways for the oxidation of difficult organic and inorganic pollutants.

Developed by Watch Water® Germany for demanding industrial and landfill wastewater, SMART PO₂® is intended to activate powerful oxidation reactions directly in contaminated water. The process targets pollutants such as VOCs, COD-forming organics, phenols, humic substances and sulfides. Depending on water chemistry and treatment conditions, oxidation may transform complex pollutants into smaller intermediates and, where sufficient oxidant demand and reaction conditions are achieved, continue toward mineralization. Site-specific treatability testing is required to determine dosage, contact time, residual oxidant, by-products and the necessary polishing stages.

Four reaction functions / Engineered into one formulation

SO₄

Selective Radical Oxidation (SULFATE-RADICAL)

SMART PO₂® is promoted as generating sulfate-radical chemistry capable of reacting with a range of persistent organic pollutants.

•OH

Broad-Spectrum Oxidation (HYDROXYL-RADICAL)

Hydroxyl-radical pathways provide highly reactive, relatively non-selective oxidation of susceptible organic compounds.

MD

Extended Pollutant Breakdown (MINERALIZATION-DRIVE)

Properly designed oxidation can continue beyond initial transformation toward lower-molecular-weight intermediates and, where demonstrated, carbon dioxide and water.

IR

Multi-Stage Treatment Compatibility (INTEGRATION-READY)

The product page positions SMART PO₂® for integration with CRYSTOLITE®, Katalox-Light® and Catalytic Carbon® filtration or polishing stages.

Science behind SMART PO₂ double oxidation

SMART PO₂® is intended to establish multiple reactive-oxygen pathways in water. Treatment performance depends on oxidant demand, pH, temperature, catalyst availability and competing water constituents.

  • Sulfate-Radical Formation – Activation of the formulation produces sulfate radicals ($SO_4^{\bullet-}$), which can oxidize electron-rich organic compounds.
  • Hydroxyl-Radical Pathway – Sulfate-radical reactions and aqueous conditions generate hydroxyl radicals ($\bullet OH$), expanding the range of susceptible contaminants.
  • Pollutant Transformation – Radical attack breaks chemical bonds and transforms complex molecules into smaller oxidation products (intermediates must be identified where environmental or reuse requirements apply).
  • Treatment-Train Polishing – Filtration, adsorption, biological treatment or neutralization may be required after oxidation to remove precipitated material, residual oxidant and remaining reaction products.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Essential information about SMART PO₂® chemistry, applications, dosage, safety and treatment limitations.

Contact Support
What is SMART PO₂®?
It is a solid industrial wastewater-treatment formulation designed to generate sulfate- and hydroxyl-radical oxidation pathways.
Which wastewater streams can be evaluated?
Potential applications include landfill leachate, chemical, refinery and textile wastewater, contaminated groundwater, water reuse and ZLD systems.
Which pollutants can it target?
The product may be evaluated for COD-forming organics, VOCs, phenols, humic substances, sulfides and other oxidizable contaminants.
Does it completely mineralize every pollutant?
This cannot be assumed. Mineralization depends on pollutant structure, oxidant demand, dosage, pH, contact time and competing substances. TOC and by-product testing are required.
What is the typical dosage?
The webpage presents approximately 30 g/m³ as a typical starting point. It is not a universal design dosage.
What is the typical contact time?
Approximately 30 minutes is presented as typical, but the required time must be determined through laboratory and pilot testing.
Does the process require aeration?
The product page says no external oxygen supply is required for the oxidation mechanism. Mixing and process ventilation may still be necessary.
Is SMART PO₂® non-hazardous?
No. Its SDS classifies it as harmful if swallowed, corrosive to skin and eyes, and harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Can it be discharged directly into natural water?
No. The SDS specifically states that untreated product must not be released into natural waters, drains or sewer systems.
Does it produce no sludge or secondary waste?
That claim should not be made universally. Metal and phosphate precipitation can produce solids, and incomplete oxidation can generate transformation products.
Can it work with other Watch Water® products?
It may be integrated with CRYSTOLITE®, Katalox-Light® and Catalytic Carbon® after compatibility and process testing.
Who should handle SMART PO₂®?
Only trained industrial personnel using the controls and personal protective equipment specified in the current SDS.
