ScaleTrapp® is a compact Quick Exchange System combining FILTERSORB® SP3-S scale-prevention media with high-purity magnesium oxide beads.
ScaleTrapp® is developed for drinking-water, coffee, catering and appliance-protection applications affected by hardness and unstable water chemistry. In the first treatment chamber, FILTERSORB® SP3-S promotes the transformation of dissolved calcium bicarbonate into microscopic calcium carbonate crystals through nucleation-assisted crystallisation. These crystals remain suspended and have a reduced tendency to form hard deposits on heating surfaces. The second chamber contains porous magnesium oxide beads intended to neutralise carbonic acidity, stabilise pH and contribute magnesium to the treated water. Both media are integrated into a replaceable Watch Water® Quick Exchange System cartridge for simple installation and maintenance.

FILTERSORB® SP3-S provides active surfaces that promote the formation of microscopic calcium carbonate seed crystals in the water.
Magnesium-based pH conditioning (MG-BUFFER)
Magnesium oxide beads react with acidic components and can contribute magnesium alkalinity, helping stabilise treated-water chemistry.
Protection for heated equipment (HEAT-PROTECT)

The science behind ScaleTrapp®
ScaleTrapp® combines calcium carbonate crystallisation with magnesium-based acidity neutralisation. It conditions hardness minerals rather than removing all calcium and magnesium from the water.
- Carbon Dioxide & Carbonic Acid – Dissolved $CO_2$ participates in water carbonate equilibria ($CO_2 + H_2O \rightleftharpoons H_2CO_3 \rightleftharpoons H^+ + HCO_3^-$), influencing pH and scale stability.
- Calcium Bicarbonate Transformation – When conditions favour crystal formation ($Ca(HCO_3)_2 \rightleftharpoons CaCO_3(s) + CO_2 + H_2O$), FILTERSORB® SP3-S provides nucleation surfaces for microscopic crystal development.
- Magnesium Oxide Hydration – The magnesium oxide stage reacts with water ($MgO + H_2O \rightarrow Mg(OH)_2$), consuming acidity and contributing magnesium.
- Scale-Adhesion Reduction – Conditions how calcium carbonate crystallises, reducing the tendency of hardness minerals to form strongly adhering deposits without removing total hardness.
