CARBONATE X-MG®

Advanced Dealkalization and Magnesium-Enrichment Technology

Premium Beverage Water

Transform water chemistry. Enhance every cup.

CARBONATE X-MG® is a specialty dealkalization and magnesium-enrichment media developed for coffee, tea, drinking water and food-and-beverage applications.

Developed by Watch Water® GmbH in Mannheim, CARBONATE X-MG® is designed to reduce carbonate alkalinity, convert carbonate species toward bicarbonate conditions and release magnesium into treated water. By adjusting alkalinity and mineral composition, the media helps protect coffee machines, vending equipment and household appliances from carbonate-scale accumulation while creating a water profile suitable for balanced beverage extraction. Selected configurations also incorporate HydroSorb® adsorber for additional contaminant reduction.

Dealkalized. Magnesium-enriched. Engineered for exceptional beverages.

The complete water recipe for coffee, tea and premium drinking water.

CARBONATE X-MG Introduction

One specialty media.
Multiple beverage-water applications.

CARBONATE X-MG® is designed for systems where alkalinity, magnesium content, scale protection and beverage extraction must be managed together.

Coffee Machines and Espresso Systems

Helps manage carbonate alkalinity, protect equipment and create a suitable mineral profile for coffee extraction.

Tea and Hot-Beverage Systems

Supports balanced mineral content and reduced carbonate-scale formation in hot-water equipment.

Household Drinking-Water Filters

Suitable for cartridge and point-of-use systems designed to produce magnesium-enriched drinking water.

Vending Machines

Supports scale control and consistent water chemistry in commercial beverage-vending equipment.

Restaurants, Cafés and Hospitality

Provides application-specific water conditioning for cafés, restaurants, hotels and food-service operations.

Food and Beverage Production

Suitable for beverage processing and specialty-water systems requiring controlled alkalinity and mineral composition.

Four water-quality functions engineered into one treatment concept

Carbonate-Alkalinity Control

CARBONATE X-MG® reduces carbonate alkalinity and shifts carbonate chemistry toward bicarbonate conditions, helping manage scale potential and beverage-water buffering.

Mineral Adjustment for Beverage Extraction

The magnesium-containing component releases magnesium ions into the treated water, helping create a mineral profile suitable for coffee, tea and drinking-water applications.

Protection for Coffee and Vending Equipment

Reduced carbonate alkalinity helps lower the potential for carbonate-scale accumulation in coffee machines, heating elements, vending systems and connected appliances.

Optional Reduction of Selected Contaminants

When HydroSorb® is included in the system, its adsorptive component is intended to reduce chloramines, organics and selected micropollutants. Performance depends on the HydroSorb® quantity, influent conditions and contact time.

Science &
Technology

CARBONATE X-MG® combines dealkalization, hydrogen-ion activity, magnesium release and optional adsorption to adjust water chemistry for beverage preparation and equipment protection.

  • Carbonate-to-Bicarbonate Conversion – Carbonate ions react with hydrogen ions to form bicarbonate.
  • Dealkalization and pH Adjustment – The brochure describes an increase in hydrogen-ion content during treatment, producing a lower service pH and reduced carbonate alkalinity.
  • Magnesium-Ion Release – Magnesium-loaded media releases magnesium ions into treated water. Magnesium can influence coffee extraction and the sensory profile of prepared beverages.
  • Optional HydroSorb® Adsorption – HydroSorb® may be incorporated to provide additional adsorption of chloramines, organics and selected emerging contaminants.

Contact Support
What is CARBONATE X-MG®?
It is a specialty dealkalization and magnesium-enrichment media for drinking water, coffee, tea and food-and-beverage systems.
What does the name CARBONATE X-MG mean?
“Carbonate” refers to the carbonate alkalinity being treated, “X” represents its reduction or transformation, and “MG” represents magnesium enrichment.
How does CARBONATE X-MG® work?
The brochure describes hydrogen-ion activity that converts carbonate toward bicarbonate conditions while magnesium ions are released into the treated water.
What is dealkalization?
Dealkalization is the reduction of water alkalinity, particularly bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity, to control pH buffering and scale potential.
Is CARBONATE X-MG® a water softener?
No. It adjusts alkalinity and mineral composition. It should not be described as producing zero-hardness water.
Does it add magnesium?
Yes. The magnesium-containing component is intended to release magnesium ions into treated water.
Why is magnesium useful in coffee water?
Magnesium can influence the extraction of flavor-active coffee compounds. The final sensory result depends on the complete mineral and alkalinity profile.
Can it protect coffee machines from scale?
Reducing carbonate alkalinity can lower carbonate-scale potential and help protect heating equipment.
Can it be used in household water filters?
Yes. It is designed for AquaPurifier cartridges and other properly engineered point-of-use systems.
What is HydroSorb®?
HydroSorb® is an adsorptive component that may be included for additional reduction of chloramines, organics and selected micropollutants.
What is the recommended flow rate?
The stated operating range is 20–60 BV/h, with 30 BV/h recommended for optimum contact time.
What is the operating-temperature range?
The brochure states 20–80°C.
How do I know when the media is exhausted?
Monitor alkalinity, pH, magnesium and scale-control performance. Replace the media when treated-water targets are no longer achieved.
Does it require regeneration?
The brochure describes replaceable media and cartridge systems rather than an on-site chemical-regeneration process.
Does it eliminate bacteria?
No. The brochure disclaimer states that the media does not eliminate bacteria. Unsafe or unknown-quality water requires adequate disinfection.
